A toddler was killed in a crash when the bike she was riding on collided with a semitruck in Uptown on Thursday morning, a Chicago Fire Department spokesperson said.

The victim, a 3-year-old girl, was on a carrier seat on the back of a bicycle operated by her mother in the 1100 block of West Leland Avenue when the crash happened with a truck traveling in the same direction, according to Chicago police.

“The bicyclist lost control and collided with the truck’s cab,” according to the police report. “The bike then fell to the ground, and the 3-year-old was struck by the truck.”

Authorities received a call about 8:15 a.m. and took the girl to Lurie’s Children Hospital where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Neither the mother nor the truck driver suffered any injuries.

The street the mother and daughter were riding on does not have protected bike lanes, according to the Chicago’s Department of Transportation’s bike map. It does have neighborhood greenways, which are residential streets that are optimized for walking and biking by using different techniques to calm traffic, such as pavement markings — however, they don’t have any physical barriers between bikes and vehicles.
