The man armed with a hatchet who was shot and killed Friday by a Naperville police officer has been identified as a 28-year-old Naperville resident by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.
Edward C. Samaan was pronounced dead at an area hospital Friday. An autopsy and X-rays have been conducted, but the cause and manner of death remain pending per further investigation, including toxicology reports, the coroner’s office said in a statement.

No other details will be made public until the investigation is complete, the statement said.
Samaan approached the officer while he was conducting a traffic stop about 11 a.m. in an office park near Bond Street and McDowell Road, police report said. He was armed with a hatchet — a photo taken from body camera video that shows the weapon was released by Naperville police — prompting the 22-year police veteran to shoot him.

No information has been provided as to what might have provoked Samaan’s actions or if he had any connection to the traffic stop being conducted. Police have not identified the officer involved, how many times Samaan was shot or at what distance.
Because it is an officer-related shooting, an independent investigation is being conducted by the DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team and the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
