A Waukegan ambulance transporting a patient collided with a motorcycle Monday afternoon, causing life-threatening injuries to the cyclist, the Waukegan fire department said.

The accident happened at about 2:50 p.m. near the intersection of Genesee and South Lake streets.

The ambulance crew of two paramedics had picked up a patient in the 200 block of South Martin Luther King Drive and was transporting the patient to Vista Medical Center when the ambulance and the motorcycle collided, the fire department said.

The ambulance requested assistance immediately and began treating the injured motorcyclist. An additional ambulance that responded to the scene brought the original patient to the hospital in stable condition, the department said.

The male motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries, the fire department said, and was taken to a hospital.

Authorities did not release the name of the motorcyclist, and additional details of the collision were not immediately available.

One of the firefighter/paramedics is a nine-year veteran of the Waukegan fire department; the other crew member has been with the department for three years, officials said.

The incident remains under investigation by Waukegan police.
