A five-bedroom, 2,181-square-foot Prairie-style bungalow in the Beverly neighborhood that was designed by noted architect Walter Burley Griffin was listed on Friday for $489,900.
Built in 1909, the bungalow is one of seven on West 104th Place in Beverly that were designed by Griffin, who also designed other homes close by in an area that the city of Chicago in 1981 landmarked as the Walter Burley Griffin Place District. Griffin (1876-1937) worked for five years in Frank Lloyd Wright’s studio in Oak Park, overseeing the construction of numerous houses and buildings that Wright had designed. As an independent architect, Griffin later won the competition to be the architect to design Australia’s capital city, Canberra.

In Beverly, the bungalow that is on the market is known as the Edmund C. Garrity House. It has 3-1/2 bathrooms, hardwood floors, a fireplace in the living room and an office.
“What stands out to me is just the feel of the house when you’re inside it,” listing agent Charles “Chip” Orr of Residential Resources told Elite Street. “It’s got this wonderful light that comes through it and this layout that just flows. The architecture is really very sound. It’s not really ostentatious and it’s not really conservative. It’s rather unique to Walter Burley Griffin. It is a very beautiful home, and it has been worked on over the years, and it’s in very good shape.”

The home’s current owner paid $275,000 for it in 2005. The owner has had it on and off the market several times since buying it, starting in 2007. Nine years later, he listed it in 2016 for $339,000 and then reduced the price to $329,000 before taking it off the market. He then relisted it in 2017 for $344,900 before again removing it from the market.
The house had a $4,579 property tax bill in the 2020 tax year.
