The reaction from Bears fans has ranged from furious to enraged to incensed. So, yeah. Not much range there. The root of the anger stems in part from the Bears’ inability to make a bigger splash at the sport’s most important position. The failure — despite incredibly aggressive efforts — to persuade the Seattle Seahawks to trade Russell Wilson has left many fans with shattered dreams and an unwillingness to settle for the averageness of Dalton. Understandable. But this kind of scenario always was more likely despite the Wilson hopes of the last three weeks. With his one-year, $10 million deal, Dalton essentially will serve as a placeholder, a bridge to the quarterback-of-the-future that general manager Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy will now try to find in the draft. But Pace and Nagy still must answer many questions. For starters, how did the Nick Foles experiment in 2020 go so haywire that he was no longer considered a bridge option? In addition, after Pace swung and missed badly on Mike Glennon, Mitch Trubisky and then Foles, how can he be relied on to find an answer in the draft? And why are the Bears always in this kind of desperate and hectic search for a quarterback? Welcome to Chicago, Andy.
