The 25,000-square-foot Marshall Field Jr. mansion was built in 1883 and was designed by architect Solon S. Beman. It then was expanded in 1902 with an addition designed by Daniel H. Burnham’s architectural firm that included a carriage house, which makes up the space that the town home occupies. Retail magnate Marshall Field, who had lived nearby, paid $65,000 in 1890 to buy the Queen Anne-style, red and brick sandstone mansion at 1919 S. Prairie Ave. for his namesake son. At the time of its completion, the mansion had 43 rooms, 14 fireplaces and nine bathrooms.
