The Chicago area’s severe weather usually peaks in May, June and July, and can include tornadoes, hail at least an inch in diameter, wind gusts 60 mph or greater and flash flooding. There are about 32 days a year of severe weather across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, according to the weather service. Strong winds are the most frequent, occurring about 23 days a year. Days with hail, about 13, follow, with 10 days of flooding and five days with at least one tornado.
