UNLV, 34-0 and winners of 45 successive games, seemed like a team of destiny heading into their Final Four meeting with Duke, a rematch of the Runnin’ Rebels’ championship rout the year before. Three UNLV players — Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon and Greg Anthony — would be among the first dozen players selected in the ’91 NBA draft. But Christian Laettner, who’s virtually Mr. March, sank a pair of free throws with 12.7 seconds left to put the Blue Devils up, 79-77, and UNLV’s Anderson Hunt missed a 3-point try as time expired. It turned out the destiny was Duke’s, as Mike Krzyzewski’s squad would cut down the nets after beating Kansas in the title game.
