Instead of being daunted by life’s turns, she “buckled down,” Ilo said, went back to school, and got a job as a secretary at Northwestern Railroad, rising eventually to chief clerk. Meanwhile, she got remarried, had another child and put herself through night school, earning a degree in interdisciplinary art through a joint program of Loyola University and the Art Institute.
