Women’s History Month started when Congress authorized and requested that President Ronald Reagan declarethe week beginning March 7, 1982, as Women’s History Week. Over the next five years, Congress continued designating Women’s History Week. In 1987, the National Women’s History Alliance (previously the National Women’s History Project) petitioned Congress to designate March as Women’s History Month.
