Arborvitaes are attractive, upright trees with feathery sprays of flat, dark-green needles. The species most often planted in the Chicago area is Eastern arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis), which is native to the region. Giant arborvitae (Thuja plicata), a Western species, is less attractive to deer and grows faster, but gets larger, up to 70 feet tall.
