Roquan Smith’s play was a highlight of the 2020 season as he racked up 139 tackles, including 18 for a loss, four sacks, six quarterback hits, two interceptions and seven passes defended. Veteran Danny Trevathan’s season wasn’t as exceptional after signing a three-year contract extension, but he seemed to get in a better groove as the season wore on. The improvement in this group is the depth provided by eighth-year veteran Christian Jones, who started 42 games for the Detroit Lions over the last three seasons after spending his first four seasons in Chicago. The Bears didn’t have a veteran backup in 2020, and when Smith was injured before the playoff game, they turned to Manti Te’o, who hadn’t played in a game all year.
