Valentine returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach for two seasons, becoming the youngest assistant ever hired by Oakland coach Greg Kampe. He helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to 48 wins — the second-most victories in a two-year span in program history, trailing only the consecutive NCAA Tournament seasons when he was a player — and a pair of postseason tournament appearances (2016 Vegas 16, 2017 NIT).
