Rip currents, however, are notoriously dangerous, even for strong swimmers. David Vaughan, beach safety director for the South Walton Fire District, stressed that swimming in the area is closed by authorities who know they may be ruining, or at least altering, the vacations of people who save and plan for a long time to bring their families to the area. A full closure of the water, the double red flags, are conditions Vaughan said he doesn’t even want his lifeguards swimming in.
