“I didn’t understand the impact that a bookstore in the neighborhood would have on people’s lives,” Kirschbraun told me at the time. “People saying, ‘When I just moved to Chicago it was the place that got me through being new.’ People sending me, from around the world, pictures of their bookshelves of books we’ve recommended. To have done that is amazing.”
