The Royals apparently didn’t learn their lesson after signing veteran outfielder Alex Gordon to a four-year, $72 million deal at age 32 in 2016. Gordon, a popular player in Kansas City, batted .234 from 2016 to 2020 and drove in 40, 45 and 54 runs in the first three years of the deal. Now they’ve signed veteran catcher Salvador Perez to a four-year, $82 million deal that can max out at $93.5 million over five years. Perez turns 31 in May and hit .235 in 2018, his last full season before Tommy John surgery forced him to miss 2019. … Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto declined to talk about his time sitting out after testing positive for COVID-19, other than to say he’s glad to be back and feeling better. Votto also didn’t know whether he would be ready for the April 1 opener. … Despite assurances that shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. had a chance to make the roster, the Royals sent their top prospect to minor-league camp Monday.
