“In many ways Black officers are the conscience of our force and we need a stronger voice,” Sgt. Jermaine Harris, president of the organization, said at the announcement. “As police officers the oath we swear requires us to take the difficult steps, no matter how uncomfortable, that are necessary to ensure civil rights are protected. We owe it to every child in a ZIP code that has more vacant lots than youth programs to be a symbol of safety and hope, not yet another system working against them.”
