The Chicago Fire’s rebuild kicked off in earnest in December 2019 with the hiring of Georg Heitz as sporting director, Sebastian Pelzer as technical director and Raphael Wicky as coach.
“(It) doesn’t matter whether it’s the first year or the second year or the third year,” Heitz said March 1 as the Fire started preseason training. “We always try to do our best to be competitive and we are pretty confident that we will do better this year than we did last year.”
The Fire started the 2021 season with an 0-1-1 record, picking up just one point from a possible six in matches that closely resembled last season’s performances.
There still is a lot of soccer to be played — 32 more matches, to be exact — this season to prove the Fire’s belief they have progressed.
But before the Fire take on the New York Red Bulls on Saturday (noon, WGN-9) in their third match of the season — and 26th under the current regime — here’s a by-the-numbers look at the first 25 matches of the Heitz/Pelzer/Wicky era.
5-11-9: Fire’s record
The 24 points gained in 25 matches equates to 0.96 points per game. Notably, the Fire were 0-9-4 in 2020 when allowing the first goal of the game and are 0-1-0 in 2021 after last Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Atlanta United.
0: Number of true road games won
Excluding the neutral-site MLS Is Back Tournament outside Orlando, Fla., the Fire have yet to win a road match since Oct. 6, 2019. That victory was a 5-2 win against Orlando City in what would turn out to be Bastian Schweinsteiger’s final match before announcing his retirement two days later. It also was Veljko Paunović’s last match as Fire coach.
6: Number of times the Fire dropped points from a winning position
Putting away matches has been a problem for the Fire. The most recent example is the 2021 season opener, in which the Fire took an early two-goal lead but left Soldier Field with a 2-2 draw.
Those six matches are:
- March 1, 2020, at the Seattle Sounders: 1-0 lead becomes 2-1 loss.
- Sept. 12, 2020, vs. the Columbus Crew: 2-0 lead becomes 2-2 draw.
- Oct. 3, 2020, at CF Montréal (at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.): 1-0 lead becomes 2-2 draw.
- Oct. 24, 2020, vs. the Red Bulls: 2-1 lead becomes 2-2 draw.
- Nov. 4, 2020, at Minnesota United: 2-0 lead becomes 2-2 draw.
- April 17, 2021, vs. the New England Revolution: 2-0 lead becomes 2-2 draw.
3: Number of times the Fire surrendered a two-goal lead
The proverbial “dreaded two-goal lead” isn’t always that dreaded for the Fire, who actually picked up four victories in 2020 after taking 2-0 leads: Aug. 25 vs. FC Cincinnati, Sept. 23 vs. the Houston Dynamo, Sept. 27 vs. Atlanta and Oct. 11 vs. D.C. United.
2: Fire’s longest winning streak
A 4-0 victory against the Dynamo and a 2-0 win against Atlanta last season were the only time the Fire picked up all three points in back-to-back games.
-8: Fire’s goal differential since the start of the 2020 season
The Fire have scored 36 goals (33 in 2020, 3 in 2021) compared with 44 goals against (39 in ’20 and 5 in ’21).
12: Number of different goal-scorers
Designated player Robert Berić (13) is far and away the Fire’s best talisman under current management. The next highest scorer is midfielder Fabian Herbers, who scored four goals in 2020 but has not yet played in 2021 because of a knee injury.
8: Number of goals conceded on corner kicks
That number, according to FBref.com, is tied for most in Major League Soccer since the start of the 2020 season. D.C. United, Montréal and the Revolution also have conceded eight goals on corners.
4: Number of clean sheets the Fire have kept
Goalkeeper Shuttleworth had four shutouts in 2020. The Fire attack, meanwhile, was held scoreless five times last season.
21: Number of new players signed under Heitz, Pelzer and Wicky
The Fire’s massive squad overhaul was one reason they struggled in 2020, and entering 2021 Heitz said the club’s strategy was to make tweaks in the name of continuity.
The players signed are:
- 2020 (17): Mauricio Pineda (homegrown player), Berić (designated player), Connor Sparrow, Miguel Navarro, Bobby Shuttleworth, Elliot Collier, Wyatt Omsberg, Boris Sekulić, Ignacio Aliseda (DP), Luka Stojanović, Gastón Giménez (DP), Brian Gutiérrez (HGP), Javier Casas Jr. (HGP), Alex Monis (HGP), Chris Brady (HGP), Allan Rodríguez (HGP), Carlos Terán
- 2021 (4): Chinonso Offor, Stanislav Ivanov, Jhon Espinoza, Jhon Durán.
Note: Two players not included in the list are Álvaro Medrán and homegrown defender Nicholas Slonina, who were signed after the end of the 2019 season under previous management.
27: Number of players who have appeared in matches
That number includes inherited players, new additions and homegrown signings. However, only two players have appeared in all 25 matches since the start of the 2020 season: Medrán (25 starts) and Berić (24 starts, 1 substitute appearance).
17 years, 2 months and 4 days: Age at the time of the youngest Fire player to play for Wicky
That would be Gutiérrez, who made his professional debut Aug. 20, 2020, in a 3-0 loss to the Crew. Gutiérrez made six appearances totaling 27 minutes in 2020.
